Angela stood in the wings.
As she gazed center stage; she smiled. Ellington had been delivered to their Buckhead home safe and sound by their local piano mover in Atlanta, Bennett Piano Movers. All lights, were focused on him; She could see what she imagined to be stardust floating in the beams of light crossing in mid air and settling on the black baby grand that sat beckoning her. “Hello old friend”, she whispered.
Remnants of perfume and dust on the heavy velvet curtains and freshly waxed hard wood floors filled the air as she admired her long time companion. Then, the aromas of the theatre dissipated, and the smell of freshly cut grass and honey-suckle seemed to be everywhere. Shorts and a t-shirt replaced her gown. Pigtails danced on her head, and bare feet ran towards an open front door. The doorway framed the truck outside. “Bennett Piano Movers”. As she moved closer, her gaze fell upon a short bearded man coming up the walk.
“Welcome to Atlanta!”
“Thank you! Is it in there?”
“Yep! She’s a real beauty.”
“It’s a he. His name is Ellington. May I go see?”
“First I need a grown up.”
“Moma! Daddy! Ellington is here! The piano mover needs you!”
Angela ran towards the truck. The grass under her feet was soft, and the air was warm. “Hello!” She yelled to the man inside the huge metal box. .
“This grand piano yours?”
“Yes Sir. It is now! It was my Granddaddy’s grand piano”
“Well, your piano made a long trip from Atlanta.! Hope you play it well and treat it good.”
Angela watched wide eyed as Ellington, covered in blankets and shrink wrap for the move, was rolled in. As Bennett piano movers staff unwrapped him, she could feel her heart beating faster.
“Ellington!” When the movers stepped away, Angela spread her arms over Ellington’s wide shiny lid. “I’m so glad you’re here.”
A tear escaped down the side of her face. “You’re going to be great”. A stage hand whispered .
“Thank you”, “ Ready Ellington? Let’s show’em what we’ve got”. As Angela crossed center stage, applause filled the hall. Now, she would surrender to the music, and her piano, Ellington.
